The importance of Aboriginal culture and language in the Goldfields is the message at the centre of a book of images being launched in Kalgoorlie-Boulder on Thursday.

Ngala Wongga: Cultural Significance of Languages was a four-year project by Margaret River-based photographer Martine Perret who became interested in endangered languages after working on a photo series exploring the connection between the Goldfields’ indigenous elders and the land.

Featuring aerial photographs, portraits of local Aboriginal elders, videos and audio recordings, the Ngala Wongga exhibition opened in Kalgoorlie-Boulder in September 2016 and toured Carnarvon, Katanning, Mandurah, Paris and Esperance.

Ms Perret has compiled some of her favourite images from the exhibition into a book, saying she hopes the project will have an impact for years to come.

“I am delighted that the Ngala Wongga story and the plight of these indigenous languages has been shared with many, as the exhibition travelled around Western Australia and opened activities for the Year of Indigenous Languages at the Australian Embassy in Paris,” she said.

Now in book format, photographs and multimedia, I hope this snapshot of the Ngala Wongga story can travel even further afield.

The free book launch at the Museum of the Goldfields is on from 5.30pm on Thursday.
