Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton wants more Jamaicans to practise prevention, arguing that this is critical in the fight against dengue.
“Prevention means destroying breeding sites in and around the house – used tires, cans, cover drums with water,” Tufton said.
The minister noted that the mosquito that spreads the virus tends to breed is in and around homes, and so persons must exercise vigilance.
“The next things is to use repellent with deet,” Tufton said. “We can all protect ourselves by purchasing repellent and using it to apply, based on instructions to our bodies. We can also use other approved home insecticides sold in stores to spray the home environment.”
Dengue crisis
In the meantime, Shadow Minister of Health Dr Morais Guy said more resources must be immediately allocated to hospitals across the island in order to adequately manage the escalating dengue crisis.
“This situation requires proper and compassionate management to ensure that resources are utilised in the best possible, and most effective, ways. Public relations cannot save lives. How long will this Government wait before more doctors and nurses, as well as medication, are put in place to prevent more of our children from dying? Jamaica has to do better than this,” Dr Guy said.
