The Asa Wright Nature Centre is to issue a statement on the future of operations amid reports that it had closed down permanently.

A post on its Facebook page on Saturday noted that the centre and its eco-lodge had been closed to visitors for months because of covid19. However, it continued, the not-for-profit trust was still in existence and would continue managing the wildlife sanctuary.

“We are also endeavouring to sustain our ongoing research and conservation projects as well as to provide needed maintenance for the trails and grounds of the centre. As we have no revenue to sustain this important activity your assistance is critical – please help support our work now with your donation.”

In October 2020, the centre was trying to raise US$50,000 to do so as well as pay 46 staff members, most of whom were volunteering their time to continue the important work.

The post added that the chair of its board would issue a statement shortly to clarify the situation.

The centre manages 495 hectares of land as a wildlife sanctuary in the Arima, Aripo and Guanapo valleys, a field research station and a lodge, and attracts visitors from all over the world.
