I’m one of the lucky people in Alice Springs to have grown up in this town.
I was born in the Alice Springs Hospital, I went through my schooling here at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College and I returned at the soonest possible time after completing my studies abroad.
That means I’ve been here long enough to see how our local businesses have evolved and become a part of the fabric of our town.
I remember before every footy season as a kid, going to Centralian Sports to check out all the new boots and begging mum for a pair, even though mine were perfectly fine. Now Intersport, that business is a part of Alice Springs.
I remember going out to dinner with friends at Sporties Bar & Bistro when it had the old Finke room, adorned with memorabilia of our great race. The decor has since changed, but that business is a part of Alice Springs.
Anyone around my age is sure to remember going to Desert Wave before any casual clothes day at school to make sure we looked as good as possible. There was a lot on the line those days, they could make or break your social standing for the rest of the year. I may longer be dressed head to toe in surf gear (even though I’ve never surfed!) but that business is a part of Alice Springs.
There are so many businesses like those I’ve mentioned that have become a part of town over many years, and even more that are just beginning. And now they face the biggest challenge possible.
Our Chief Minister Michael Gunner has said this week that “COVID19 is doing more damage to our Territory economy than any natural disaster ever has”.
That is absolutely true.
No one could have possibly foreseen the impact that COVID-19 has had on our community. It seems the impact grows each day.
No one has felt that impact more than our local businesses.
Life is not the same as it was this time last year. Hell, life isn’t the same as it was this time last week.
New restrictions put in place to reduce the spread of the virus have necessarily been implemented, but those same restrictions will hit our businesses hard.
That’s why I’m urging everyone who can to help.
Within your own means, help soften the impact on our local businesses.
That could simply mean going out to buy a $5 coffee instead of making it at home, or ordering a $20 meal for lunch or dinner every now and again.

Those may seem like little, trivial things but they will add up more than you or I can imagine.
All Centralians are set to do things a little tougher over the next six or so months, that’s inevitable. The beauty of Alice Springs, though, is that tough times don’t break us. We get through them together.
A list of businesses that are still operating can be found below, and at our website also.
The list may not feature all businesses, so if you’d like to be added please get in contact with us at news@aliceadvocate.com.au
