You may have this debt because you signed up for a course you didn’t know you had to pay for.
You may have signed up for the course at a shopping centre or another community location. The provider may have offered you a laptop or something else to sign up.
After signing up you may not have heard from the provider. You also may not have got a certificate or any educational material.
If you have a Vocational Education and Training (VET) study debt you don’t remember getting, you should get help.
It will display in your loan balance on the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website. You’ll also know if the ATO takes money from your tax return to repay a debt.
Contact the VET Student Loans Ombudsman (VSLO) before 31 December 2020 and make a complaint. You can make an online complaint or call 1300 062 072.
They’ll investigate if your study debt is illegitimate. If it is, the government may cancel your debt. This means you won’t have to pay it back.
