Residents of at least one inner-city community in the Corporate Area have sought to justify their ‘partying’ actions, stating that they are merely seeking to enjoy themselves.

At least three videos are being circulated on social media which show dozens of men and women dancing and gyrating on each other in a yard.

There are also videos of persons partying on the roof of high-rise buildings.

“Nobody down yah suh nuh have nuh corona. Di house dem hot bad so we just hold a likkle vibe and gwan play some music,” one resident told THE STAR via telephone on Saturday.

The Government has imposed several social distancing restrictions in a bid to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus on the island. In addition to ordering the closure of entertainment venues, lounges and bars, the authorities have also withdrawn all entertainment permits. Gatherings have also been restricted to 10 people

Prime Minister Andrew Holness also announced new curfew times for the Easter weekend, starting from Good Friday to Easter Monday.

All persons are required to be indoors between 3 p.m. and 7 a.m. daily. However, some persons have defied the orders, opting to party, notwithstanding mounting evidence that social distancing is the most effective way to combat COVID-19.

“Big holiday and we must lock up inna house from 3 o’clock and we anno house mouse? Dat nah go work,” one Rema resident said.

“We no mean it as no disrespect still but we just a have one last dance,” a male said.

Persons with whom THE STAR spoke made it clear that they understand the danger of the coronavirus.

One person said that “the bag a video ting and dancing and running up and dung never call fah”.

“Mi love party bad and mi miss it because me is a likkle promoter so mi a guh gwan hold it and pray say it go way quick. Dah sickness yah rough and poor people like myself a guh feel it wicked because we no have money to fight it,” a female resident said.

As of Saturday, there were 69 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Jamaica. Some 13 people have fully recovered from the disease while four have died.
