Jessica Mauboy is proud of her Aboriginal heritage.

And the Northern Territory-born singer is now lending her star power to campaign for constitutional recognition for Indigenous Australians.

‘It’s a wake-up call for people of all races,’ Jessica, 30, told The Sun-Herald on Sunday about the push for change.

Jessica’s views come ahead of her appearance on the cover of Marie Claire’s February 2020 ‘The Time Is Now’ issue with fellow Indigenous Australian stars  Samantha Harris and Miranda Tapsell.

The Sapphires actress said she hoped that all Australians could see the importance of recognition in the Constitution, regardless of their origins.

‘It’s about putting a line in the sand on what has happened before and giving us a way to go forward together,’ she said.

‘Constitutional recognition is a powerful symbolism for Indigenous people,’ she said.

‘There is still so much inequality… It’s not right.

The pop singer, who rose to fame in 2006 on Australian Idol, said she feels passionate to share her views now then ever before.

Jessica added: ‘Now I am confident in who I am, as a woman and performer. I feel unchained.’
