Premier Mark McGowan says the State Government will fight an “extreme” $290 billion damages claim by a Noongar woman.
Naomi Smith lodged the compensation application and affidavit with the Federal Court on November 22.
According to the ABC, the claim is for “spiritual damage” caused by the loss of traditional land in WA’s South West.
She told the network the claim was seeking reimbursement for the extinguishment of their native title rights.
Her lawyer said it was the biggest claim ever made in Australia.
Mr McGowan said the State had already reached a deal with the Noongar people under the Indigenous Land Use Agreement.
“A $290 billion claim is pretty extreme,” the Premier said on Friday.
“We will get advice on what the best course is but it sounds way over the top to me.”
