Former Puerto Rico Treasury secretary still in race

SAN JUAN — Although the Popular Democratic Party’s (PDP) Roberto Prats discarded Wednesday a run for governor to instead endorse Sen. Eduardo Bhatia, former Treasury Secretary Juan Zaragoza remained hopeful of his chances when facing the party’s three candidates in the primaries.

“The decision of colleague Roberto Prats is a very personal one and I respect it. I recognize his sense of responsibility and love for Puerto Rico. I wish him much success personally and in his professional career,” Zaragoza said in a statement.

“I urge my other colleagues in the primary race to continue leading a campaign of ideas, with respect, so that voters have the opportunity to carefully evaluate our trajectory, proposals and work agendas for the future development of our homeland. We have a duty to give change a purpose and give that purpose causes to fight for. We have a historical obligation to meet the needs of our people, putting people first,” the gubernatorial hopeful added.

Prats: PDP needs ‘fewer candidates’

“I will not [run] for governor and support Eduardo Bhatia to be the governor of Puerto Rico,” Prats announced Wednesday.

“I thank him for taking the step over a year ago and returning to public service. The days of Roberto Prats in public service are just beginning,” said Bhatia, who took the opportunity to urge Prats’ campaign to join his.

The PDP’s Isabela Mayor Carlos Delgado Altieri and San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto are also running for governor.
