The West Australian’s Annabel Hennessy has been crowned West Australian Journalist of the Year.

At tonight’s WA Media Awards, Hennessy won four awards, including the prestigious Arthur Lovekin Prize for excellence in journalism alongside the major prize.

It’s the second year in a row a reporter for The West Australian has won Journalist of the Year.

Seven West Media was far and away the big winner of the night.

Hennessy’s swag of awards – for her investigation into the incarceration of Aboriginal woman Jody Gore – also included the Best Print News and Social Equity Report.

The Sunday Times political editor Joe Spagnolo won Best Political Report for his series of exclusives during the Clive Palmer hard border battle.

Glen Quartermain’s ground-breaking story in The West Australian revealing Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer’s chronic traumatic encephalopathy diagnosis scored him Best Sport Report.

The West’s Ross Swanborough won Best Feature Photograph/Essay.

Chief sub-editor Paul Barry won the Headline Journalism prize with “No sex please, we’re Balinese”, “Worst food bar naan” and “Pulp friction”, published in The West and the Albany Advertiser.

Seven’s Flashpoint team won best television News Story/Feature for its in-depth coverage of the coronavirus pandemic while the network’s Syan Dougherty won best Health/Medical Report.

Seven sports reporter Ryan Daniels was awarded the Matt Price Prize for best columnist for his work published in The West Australian.

Seven West’s talented community news team was also well represented. Sarah Brookes from the Southern Gazette shared the prize for Best Suburban Reporting with the Mandurah Coastal Times’ Jake Dietsch.

Andrew Ritchie from Western Suburbs Weekly won Best Community/Regional Photography.

Best Freelance Journalism went to Kristen Shorten, for her entrancing investigation into the abduction and murder of schoolboy Gerard Ross, published in The West Australian and thewest.com.au.

In total, Seven West Media won 14 out of the 25 awards.

WAN editor-in-chief Anthony De Ceglie said he was extremely proud of his team.

“The award-winning journalism by Annabel and the rest of the group is a testament to hard work, tenacity and a passion for the truth,” he said.

“Annabel’s efforts to free Ms Gore from a jail sentence she should not have been serving is the very best example of what we can achieve in this craft.

“It’s important to note too that along with having the vast majority of winners, we also had the vast majority of nominees.

“They should all be extremely proud of what they do day in, day out.”
