Walmart Inc. of Bentonville on Monday announced a $5 million grant to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

The retailer said its support of museum is “art of the company’s continued commitment to advance causes that promote diversity and inclusion.” It is the second donation Walmart has made to support the its initiatives. Walmart gave $5 million in 2010 to support design and construction of the facility.

Walmart said the latest grant will benefit visitor services programs; the corporate leadership council; collections and acquisitions, scholarship and research; education and public programs; and exhibitions and emerging technologies.

“The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a vital institution, deepening everyone’s understanding of our nation’s history through the lens of the African American experience,” Julie Gehrki, Walmart’s vice president of philanthropy, said in a news release. “Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have a long history of supporting diversity and inclusion, and we are pleased to support the museum as they continue to build out programs to advance their mission.”

The company said it will host a private event later today to to celebrate the museum’s contributions and “acknowledge the critical role the Congressional Black Caucus” played in making the museum a reality.

Opened in 2016, the museum has seen more than 7 million visitors. Its exhibits include more than 3,000 artifacts on display. It is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history and culture.
