A Pilbara-based Aboriginal corporation has launched its own brand of bottled water to supply to mine sites.

Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation developed Yurrama Water with help from mining giant Sodexo, with funds from the sales to fund indigenous youth employment programs in the Pilbara and provide an increase in indigenous jobs.

The bottled water was named after an Aboriginal term for a small soak dug near a dry, stagnant or contaminated water source, where the sand acts as a filter to produce clear and drinkable water.

Sodexo recently announced a commitment to supply the bottles at all its West Australian mine sites.

AAC director Gayden Carey said the partnership made Yurrama Water commercially viable.

Sodexo general manager indigenous and community engagement Sean Armistead said Sodexo was enabling an increase in indigenous employment.

Yurrama Water was officially launched on February 18 and will be available in 600ml and 1.5-litre bottles.
