Australia Day celebrations will take place across Greater Shepparton on Tuesday, January 26, however attendees are advised to do so safely.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be QR codes, hand sanitiser and social distancing as part of the regular ceremonies and entertainment.
But unfortunately the traditional barbecues and breakfasts won’t be taking place.
There is no official scheduled event for Toolamba. There also won’t be guest speakers or ambassadors this year.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said it was a time for all residents to celebrate what it means to be Australian.
“Australia Day is a day to reflect on what it means to be Australian, to celebrate contemporary Australia and to acknowledge our history,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
“Over the past year our community and the nation has faced fire, flood, drought and the coronavirus pandemic. Australia Day presents us with a welcome opportunity to reflect on our recent challenges, respect those who put others before themselves and celebrate our nation’s resilience and unity.
“We also understand Australia Day is not a day of celebration for all. The day provides an opportunity to acknowledge, learn and understand our nation’s past and to reflect on the history, traditions and cultures of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”
